Ergonomic and stylish chair can relieve some pressure from your knees

When looking for a chair that I’ll use for work (a.k.a the chair I’ll be sitting in for around 6 hours), the number one consideration is if it’s comfortable enough. How it’s designed is not so much of a factor when choosing the chair since what’s important is I can work properly while sitting on it. As I get older however, ergonomics is also a factor in choosing a chair especially since hours are spent in that piece of furniture. But what if it looks like an art piece more than a chair?

Designer: Serena Papait

That was my first impression when I saw the Moon Chair design. Like, how in heavens am I going to be comfortable sitting on that? Sure, it looks like an interesting piece of design but it does look like it belongs more in a museum than at my workspace. But the chair is actually created to be functional, ergonomic, and have a pretty unique design, inspired by the idea of infinity.

The chair is shaped to be an infinity symbol and the part where your legs are placed is able to relieve the pressure point on your knees. That is, if you want to place your knees there since you also have the option to just sit on it like a regular chair. You can also rock it so you are in an active sitting position in case you need to be non-static. It is made from polypropylene with neoprene inserts at the contact points. It also has a CATAS EN 1728 certification.

The Moon Chair is available in white, beige, shadow gray, and olive green colors but you can also customize the fabric in case you have a different color preference. I’m still not sure if it’s a chair I’d like at my desk, given that I also have back issues. But I could probably sit on it for a couple of hours if I need some kind of movement while I’m working.

]]>

Welcoming a new member into the family is a special time full of excitement and happiness. Setting up a cozy space for a new baby is important, and the crib plays a major role in that. Most conventional cribs can be used until the baby turns 3 years old, depending on the size of it. Once outgrown, these cribs become obsolete and are often discarded. But what if a crib could be more than just a baby bed? Imagine a crib that doesn’t become useless after a few years but turns into cool chairs instead. This is a new kind of crib that goes beyond the usual, making it not just practical but also eco-friendly. This clever idea is changing the way we see cribs and making baby products better for the environment.

Designer: Zhipeng Qiu, Yufeng Lin

The traditional notion of cribs being a single-use item is challenged by a design that incorporates a thoughtful combination and disassembly feature. The crib can seamlessly transform into two stylish leisure chairs, offering a sustainable solution to the short-lived nature of conventional cribs. This design not only addresses the issue of limited functionality but also promotes responsible resource use and environmental consciousness.

The transformation from crib to chairs is made possible through an ingenious chute structure and plug-in mechanism. This ensures that the process is user-friendly and easily manageable for parents. The chairs maintain a balance in form and size, providing a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing addition to any home. The product embodies a gentle sense of wrapping and comfort, reminiscent of a mother’s care, ensuring the child’s well-being during the crucial developmental years.

One of the standout features of this innovative crib design is its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. By repurposing the crib into functional chairs, the design minimizes waste and contributes to a more circular economy. This approach aligns with the growing global emphasis on responsible consumption and reducing the environmental impact of consumer products.

Despite its environmentally conscious design, the product does not compromise on appearance, beauty, or comfort. The creators have successfully blended aesthetics and sustainability, offering a visually appealing and eco-friendly solution for families. This dual-purpose furniture piece serves as a testament to how thoughtful design can enhance the quality of public life by promoting longevity and minimizing waste.

This innovative crib design represents a significant step forward in the realm of baby products. By challenging the conventional notion of single-use cribs and introducing a sustainable and versatile approach, this design not only meets the needs of growing families but also contributes to a more eco-conscious society. As consumers increasingly prioritize sustainable choices, this innovative crib design sets a positive example for the industry, encouraging the creation of products that enhance both functionality and environmental responsibility.

A wonderful twist on how crockery gets stored in cabinets, the Gere Multifunctional Crockery Shelf turns your plates into decorative panels that contribute to the furniture’s aesthetic. The Gere Multifunctional Crockery Shelf looks like a gorgeous piece of furniture with abstract art on the front… but what appears to be art is, in fact, a series of partitioned plates for eating different food. Each plate has a uniquely different partition design, which not only contributes to the shelf’s eye-catching facade, but also makes eating a rather fun experience! Behind each plate lies a storage area for your other crockery, giving you a fun, yet functional shelf for your kitchen!

Designer: Florian Beser

The inspiration behind Gere stems from the growing trend of minimalism and the need to optimize small living spaces. The project focuses on addressing the issue of large shelves filled with round plates that result in wasted space. The goal is to create a crockery shelf that is compact yet caters to the storage needs of individuals in smaller households.

To achieve this goal, the design team employed a comprehensive research process that included surveys, market analysis, interviews with the target audience, and the creation of a user journey map. The insights gained from this research provided a deep understanding of kitchen storage preferences, structuring items in the kitchen, and interaction points with shelves and plates.

Gere seamlessly combines shelves and plates, utilizing the plates to form a relief-like front for the shelf. This unique design creates additional interior space that can be efficiently utilized to store more crockery, cups, glasses, and other kitchen essentials. The gridlike structure of Gere allows for scalability, enabling larger or smaller versions to cater to different household sizes.

Ideal for placement in kitchens or dining rooms, Gere can be hung on the wall. The individual rows of plates can be folded down, providing easy access to stored items or allowing the removal of a plate from the front. The plates themselves feature segments, enabling users to separate main courses and side dishes on a single plate for convenient transportation. In addition to the front storage, Gere offers additional shelf space for storing crockery, cups, glasses, and more, making it a modularly expandable crockery set.

The functionality of Gere relies on the careful consideration of material properties. The shelf is crafted from local oak wood, chosen for its sturdiness and resistance to water. The plates, conceptualized using 3D graphic software, are 3D printed, translated into plaster molds, and ultimately cast in porcelain.

Specifications for Gere include 240mm x 240mm x 20mm dimensions for the plates and a prototype shelf measuring 1200mm x 200mm x 1300mm. The customizable size of the shelf ensures that Gere can be tailored to the specific needs and preferences of different users.

Gere stands as a testament to the marriage of form and function in the realm of kitchen storage. Its innovative design not only maximizes space utilization but also brings an element of aesthetic appeal to the utilitarian aspect of crockery storage. As the demands of modern living continue to evolve, Gere offers a practical and elegant solution for those seeking to optimize their living spaces without compromising on style or functionality.

]]>

While all furniture needs to be stable, chairs and other seating furniture need to meet two requirements. They have to be stable enough to hold the weight of the person sitting on them, but they also have to be comfortable to encourage or even tempt those people to use them. Then again, there are some seats that seem to actually discourage lounging around, adopting a design that’s purely utilitarian and sufficient for a brief rest of a few minutes. However, there are chairs that were designed with comfort in mind but fall slightly short of that goal. This stool, for example, is undoubtedly quite useful, space-efficient, and probably even sustainable, but it might have slightly missed the mark in one of its core use cases.

Designer: Jeongchun Lee

The stool looks simple enough at first glance, with a tall box for a base and two plain boards forming the actual seat as well as a backrest. The latter element puts this design somewhere in between a typical stool and a chair, though the narrow area and absence of arms put it more in the category of a stool. Either way, it’s clearly designed for sitting, but it also does more than that.

The base of the stool has a rack for holding reading materials, either magazines or a few books. This small detail makes the design better suited for places where such an activity is conducive, such as a library, a lobby, or a common area in offices or schools. Of course, you can also place it around your home and it won’t even take up too much space because of its tall and narrow structure.

The Chair 025 design concept, however, has one trick up its sleeve. The seat can rotate 360 degrees, allowing you to actually face any direction you prefer without having to move the chair itself. That said, you might not be able to swing around so easily because your legs will hit the corners of the “stall” or base. Instead, you will just be swiveling back and forth, which could be the goal to induce a little blood circulation even while you’re sitting, although that still runs the risk of injuring your legs if you’re not careful.

The design’s low backrest can also be a point of contention, given it doesn’t exactly provide enough support and could even lead to injury or accidents if you forget that it doesn’t completely go all the way up. For a stool that seems to encourage sitting for long periods of time to read, the potential discomfort is a little counterintuitive. The economy of design and potential for using sustainable materials, however, do make the Chair 025 concept a candidate for cramped spaces and budget-constrained owners.

Terrazzo side table concept seems to tempt fate and defy the laws of physics

]]>

Tables come in all shapes and sizes, but regardless of the design, they all need to have a single critical trait: they have to be stable. No matter how breathtaking a table might be, it is nothing but a piece of art if it comes crashing down under the lightest of weights. Stability can be achieved through many means, but for something like a coffee table or even a side table, that mostly means having a flat surface that doesn’t wobble or, more importantly, doesn’t tip over. That’s the behavior that people have come to expect from even the most beautiful table, which is why this side table concept is striking both for its elegant looks as well as its rather worrying composition that precariously balances the tabletop on a curved surface, or at least it would seem like it.

Designer: Stuart Cole

Objects that boggle the mind and seem to defy the laws of physics have always been a fascination for us, which is probably why balancing toys or levitating speakers have always been popular products. That, however, doesn’t apply to furniture, especially ones that we expect to be stable or fixed. Seeing a table that’s about to topple over is enough to give some people a heart attack, but fortunately, that’s not the case for the aptly named “Balance” side table design concept.

The table’s form is actually pretty simple, utilizing basic geometrical shapes like a disc and cups. It’s the tension between these shapes, however, that gives Balance its dynamic and rather unstable appearance. It’s almost as if the circular tabletop would topple and fall off the upside-down bowl shape of its base, or that the cup would similarly fall over the edge and break. Of course, it’s all just an illusion because all three parts are joined using interlocking mechanisms that prevent them from falling apart, at least not without much effort.

Balance’s appeal doesn’t stop at its eye-catching shape. Its unique appearance is due not only to the use of terrazzo but also from employing recycled materials. This gives the side table not only a distinctive visual character but also a sustainable narrative that will surely be a topic of conversation for envious visitors. You might even be tempted to use it as a coffee or center table, rather than just leaving it off to the side, though that temptation might also be tempered by unfounded worries that the table will eventually become unbalanced and send your cups and books crashing down.

Screw-less stackable chairs offer a stress-free and sustainable way to sit

Most seating furniture is designed to more or less stay permanently where they’re located, but some spaces require chairs that can be added or removed, sometimes even at a moment’s notice. In order to conserve space, some of these chairs can be folded while others can be stacked on top of each other. One common trait between these two different designs, however, is that they either already come in a single inflexible piece or have to be assembled with much effort. In this agile and fast-paced world, neither seems to be an ideal condition, and this sustainable design offers an alternative that eases the burden of setting up each chair and doesn’t take up space when you don’t need them for the time being.

Designer: Martini & Dall’Agnol

Stackable chairs aren’t exactly novel or uncommon, but the majority of those tend to have a limit before they start tipping over because of the overall form of the chair. The Stack chair, in contrast, was designed especially with that use case in mind, and thanks to its compass-like four-legged base, you can stack the chairs almost to infinity, at least in theory. Of course, you’ll be limited by how much vertical space you have and how high you can safely reach, but it’s reassuring to know that there is enough leeway there for you to stop worrying about dozens of chairs taking up precious space when not in use.

That’s not even the most impressive thing about the Stack chair, though. The design comes in only two parts, the base and the shell, and these two parts can be joined by simply snapping the base underneath the shell’s uniquely designed rim. With just a snap, the two become a single and stable piece of furniture, simplifying not just the manufacturing process and assembly but also shipping.

This fastener-free design also lends itself quite well to customization, as you can mix and match different base and shell colors or even materials. By default, it comes with a polypropylene shell, but it can also be made from wood that’s then upholstered with fabric, leather, or other materials. The chairs can be made to match any style that your space requires, and not just with a single color either.

The choice of polypropylene wasn’t made on a whim either and was intended to help make the chair not only long-lasting but also recyclable. In addition to being space-efficient when it comes to storage, the Stack chair also aims to be efficient in manufacturing, packaging, and transportation, leading to a more sustainable product overall.

A chair is probably one of the most important pieces of furniture in our home. We spend the majority of our day sitting on chairs, whether we’re working in our home office, enjoying a meal, or simply sitting and reading a book for leisure! Hence, a chair needs to not only be comfortable but ergonomic and aesthetic as well. And, a unique and innovative chair design that is made using super interesting materials is the Mat Chair by Normann Copenhagen.

Designer: Normann Copenhagen

Designers Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen teamed up with furniture brand Norman Copenhagen to create a collection of plant-based chairs, which were unveiled at Stockholm Design Week. The Mat furniture collection includes two unique chairs – one made from hemp, a type of cannabis plant, and one made from a combination of hemp and eelgrass – a marine plant much like seaweed. These intriguing biomaterials were used to replace injection-molded plastic, creating a shell chair supported by powder-coated steel legs.

In around 2008 Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen started to experiment and trial with the use of hemp. “Now, some 20 years later, the hemp material we have developed in collaboration with Normann Copenhagen is more responsible, a lot sturdier, and with a higher aesthetic appeal than any of the previous prototypes,” Hiort-Lorenzen said. “It’s a one-of-its-kind product.”

The chairs were created in collaboration with hemp specialists from the Danish Technological Institute. The shells are created from hemp stems instead of leaves, and the stems are sourced from farms that usually treat them as a waste product. The hemp fibers are combined with dried eelgrass to build the eelgrass chair. The milled hemp and eelgrass fibers are transformed into a sheet material and then shaped using a specially developed compression machine. The fibers are mixed with a “bico binder” to make the chairs easily recyclable.

“The idea of using a bio-based binder is appealing since it’s a natural material and would reduce the use of oil,” said Søren Stryhn Petersen, chief technology officer at Normann Copenhagen. “However, since the beginning of this project, it has been very important for us that the material we use can be recycled,” he concluded.

1. Bookgroove

Called the Bookgroove, this unique furniture design functions as a bookrack and a table. It has a seamless and well-designed body that makes it an excellent fit for contemporary homes. It is a conceptual design that deserves to be converted into a real one.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Bookgroove may look circular at first glance, but as you look it has a J-shaped carving on one side that can store multiple books. It is an interesting way to store books, as they mimic the shape of the built-in shelf on the side table.

What we like

 • Can accommodate a cup of coffee or a glass of wine
 • Unique way to store your favorite books

What we dislike

 • The books positioned at the bottom of the curve can get damaged over time
 • Difficult to access books when you want to read them

2. Bookish Bookmark

Becoming almost the reading partner that most book-loving introverts would love to have, this bookmark holds your page in place while you run and that cup of coffee to warm your hands on cold, cozy days. The bookish bookmark is your friend in need – with a transparent acrylic design, its unique shape ensures that the book stays open while staying true to its curved form.

Click Here to Buy Now: $55 $65 (15% off at checkout). Hurry, Valentine’s Day sale ends in 48 hours!

Why is it noteworthy?

The acrylic design weighs at 220gm, keeping the bookmark in place while you sip at a beachy breezy resort or if you have a window open in your kitchen while you cook the latest new recipe in your home.

What we like

 • The solid design keeps your pages in place and also protects your book from any accidental spills
 • The transparent design almost highlights the book, calling you to your open story and to resume it every moment you have.

What we dislike

 • There is no way to fold the design, making it difficult to travel with.

3. Triangle Side Table

Called the Triangle Side Table, this unique table features a flat horizontal surface, as well as a groove for securing a writing instrument. The main attraction is a resting place for whatever you’re currently reading, and you can place the partially opened book on top of the triangle.

Why is it noteworthy?

The open interior is a great place to showcase reading materials, but you can use it to hold potted plants or even a pet mattress. It has a unique shape, beveled edges, as well as a minimalist base that gives the impression that the table is magically floating.

What we like

 • Looks like it is magically floating

What we dislike

 • Not the best at functioning as a regular table

4. BOOF

Shaped like an adorable little house, BOOF is a reading lamp that is placed on a metallic desk. The fun bit is that you can place a book on its roof, which gives the image of a house lit during the night.

Why is it noteworthy?

When a book is placed on BOOF, the subtle light on the window and the ground floor light up. The triangular roof also functions as a natural bookmark for the book you place on it. The light is quite soft and inspiring, letting you focus on the written word.

What we like

 • Merges with the bedroom decor, and makes a fun and functional addition to your living space

What we dislike

 • Will consume a lot of space when placed on your side table

5. Plot Twist Bookshelf

PLOT TWIST Bookshelves

PLOT TWIST Bookshelf Concept

Designed by Deniz Aktay, the Plot Twist Bookshelf features four separate twisted wooden elements that are connected to one another, building a stable and innovative form. The unconventional and mesmerizing design truly captures whoever looks at it!

Why is it noteworthy?

The bookshelf’s design can be accessed from every side. It is oddly satisfying and features curves that are seen in the designer’s other projects. Most of the furniture designs undergo bending and twisting like Aktay’s Wavelet, Tie Stool, and the Pet Table.

What we like

 • Similarly sized books can be easily arranged for a clutter-free look
 • Stable design that stands on its own

What we dislike

 • Space-consuming design, not well-suited for homes with space constraints

6. Fréquence Shelf

Dubbed the Fréquence shelf, this minimal and sophisticated shelving design is a multifunctional and modular piece of furniture that is fantastic for holding and storing your prized books.

Why is it noteworthy?

The shelf includes a bunch of geometrically shaped modules that can be combined, mixed, and matched to create a variety of designs, according to your taste and preference.

What we like

 • The elements can be configured to create a small bookcase or a larger room divider

What we dislike

 • Bulky + space-consuming design, not suited for smaller homes

7. Nodding Chair

Called the Nodding Chair, this unique chair is perfect for book lovers! It lets your body have its range of natural motions while reading, resting, or even writing. It can be tilted forward and backward, allowing you to make smaller movements that won’t let you feel too nauseous.

Why is it noteworthy?

The entire chair doesn’t move, only the seat can swing in small movements. This allows you to have motion, but not too much of it. Also, it reduces the pressure on the floor, so you won’t get marks and scratches on the floor.

What we like

 • Comes with a partner footstool, letting you get into a comfy position

What we dislike

 • The seat doesn’t seem to be that comfortable as it’s just plain wood and there’s no cushion

8. Overlap Table

Called the Overlap table, this versatile furniture design is quite commanding and functional. It functions as a coffee and side table, while also serving as an excellent storage space for your books, also allowing you to showcase them.

Why is it noteworthy?

This beautiful furniture design truly prioritizes storage, something that modern homeowners will truly appreciate as well, considering the space constraint issues we all face these days.

What we like

 • Functions as a coffee and side table, as well as a bookcase
 • Minimal + clean aesthetics that allow it to merge with any living space

What we dislike

 • The box holds books only up to a fixed size and doesn’t allow for bigger books to be kept, so not the best option for those who have a versatile range of books

9. Grid Chair

Called the Grid Chair, this simple and tastefully designed chair by SUNRIU Design, and has a lot of thoughtful details that make it quite unique and appealing. Although it looks like an ordinary wooden chair at first glance, it has a couple of flat elements incorporated.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Grid Chair is built of four planks of wood arranged in an interesting grid-like manner. The lines of the chair stagger together to create a neat grid that produces extended flat surfaces on either side of the chair.

What we like

 • The extended surfaces serve as storage spaces to hold and display your books

What we dislike

 • The wooden edges of the extended surfaces are rough and raw and could hurt young children and pets, so must be kept away from them

10. The Nemuix

The Nemuix is a reading light that is as thin as a bookmark, and slimmer than a dollar coin! It is also dexterous enough to fold. It is made from reinforced plastic film, hence it can be bent and flexed without receiving any creases.

Why is it noteworthy?

The reading light is fitted with a low blue-light LED, which minimizes the amount of High Bio wavelength emitted by artificial light and digital devices.

What we like

 • It is bright enough to let you read your book, even in pitch darkness

What we dislike

 • Looks quite easy to misplace and lose

Bright, colorful, flexible, buoyant, and life-saving. These are the words that are often used to describe pool noodles, sometimes called waterlogs or even water woggles. These floating foam tubes allow kids and adults alike to engage in playful banter in the pool while still remaining safe, though they’re also finding use outside of the water. Their flexible bodies and soft material make the perfect objects for safe play, but they’ve amusingly also become the foundations of designs completely unrelated to their original use. Take this experimental set of furniture that employs these vibrant tubes to deliver that same whimsical atmosphere to chairs, tables, and everything in between.

Designer: Lieyah Dagan

They may come by any other name, but pool noodles are a popular component in many fanciful designs, from playground obstacle courses to car covers. Their ubiquity, affordability, and flexibility make it easy to shape them into different objects, combining them to form a more complex composition of rods, circles, and arcs. What pool noodles aren’t known for is stability and rigidity, properties that are almost antithetical to the very essence of these foamy objects. And yet that’s exactly what this furniture is presenting, mixing contrasting elements to give the designs a distinct, lively character.

The first step in producing the Looped line of indoor and outdoor furniture was to actually break chairs, tables, and other furniture down to their frames, revealing the structure that ultimately gives them form. The pool noodles are then used to “flesh out” the actual shape of the furniture, giving them mass that would be needed to support their newfound purpose as utilitarian objects. Once the final designs have been selected, dowels and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are added to provide the needed support to make the furniture become more stable and reliable.

Of course, it wouldn’t be fun if the pool noodles simply followed the same shape as the original furniture. Looped embodies not just the characteristics but also the spirit of these playful waterlogs, employing plenty of curves, loops, and over-the-top proportions that make the furniture almost feel like toys. That, for better or worse, is both the strength and the flaw of the design.

Loop has an undeniable pull that makes people want to play with it, whether it’s because of the bright colors, the soft material, or familiarity with pool noodles. That’s fine with soft toys like actual pool noodles, but playing with a chair or a table brings risks of accidents and injuries. In the end, it creates a perception of playful engagement when they’re also supposed to be designed for serious use, creating a conflict in the mind of the viewer that is both enthralling but also a bit confusing.
